Greatness is a State of Mined
Is your search for another “hack” keeping you from digging deep today?
The greatness we are building is limited by the depth of our foundation.
I saw a small plot of land – just one-quarter of a city block wide – being developed for a high-rise in Chicago yesterday. Excavators were carving a foundation into the urban floor. I looked at the artist’s rendering of the planned skyscraper and thought, “No way. Not in this tiny space.”
While I struggled to imagine the finished product, others were putting their energy into digging deeper. The greatest builders know that the strength of the foundation determines the project’s ultimate potential. Those who dig deep think grand thoughts in small spaces.
I love to scrape the sky. But I often forget about the days of foundation work that allow us to stand with confidence, enjoying the view from the eighty-eighth floor.
Greatness in our projects requires a state of mined.
Foundation work includes honing your identity, character, and mission. If it feels like digging today, change your perspective. You’re actually mining.
The dirt under your nails will wash out. And though there may be an occasional drop of blood there will also be flecks of gold. Mine deeper and your project will go higher.
